How can I disallow PDF printing?

When you send the PDF file created with novaPDF to another recipient, if you don't apply any restrictions to the PDF it could be printed on a regular printer. If you want to disallow the printing of your PDF file, go to novaPDF Printing Preferences window (Start->Settings->Printers and Faxes, right-click novaPDF and select Printing Preferences), Security tab and select Low Level or High level in the Encryption level section. Make sure that the Print document option is not marked and click the Ok button to save your preferences (you can add an owner password to prevent changes to these settings in the PDF).

How can I print to PDF from Adobe FreeHand?

Printing your Adobe FreeHand document to a PDF is very easy with novaPDF. Just open your document (File->Open...->Browse to your file, select it and click Open) and select the Print option (File->Print... or pressing "Ctrl+P").

If you didn’t set novaPDF as your default printer when you installed it, in the Printing options window that appears, select novaPDF from the drop-down menu under the Printer section.
If novaPDF is the default printer you can skip this step and print your file to PDF by pressing the "Ok" button (after you have selected your printing options).

Next you will be prompted to save your file to a location (if you didn’t select the AutoSave option in novaPDF), so just browse to your desired location and click "Ok" - the PDF will be immediately generated.

How do I stop novaPDF from automatically displaying PDFs after creation?

By default, novaPDF opens the PDF file generated with the default PDF viewer installed on your computer. If you don’t want the PDF opened after you print a document, follow these steps:

  • Go to Start->Settings and click on Printers and Faxes (only Printers in Windows Vista)
  • Right click on novaPDF and select Printing Preferences
  • In the Printing Preferences window go to the Save tab and in the After Save Action section change the selection from Open with default viewer to None
  • Click OK to close this window and save the change. This will stop PDFs from being automatically opened after creation

What is the difference between "Fill forms" and "Adv. Fill Forms" in Document Restrictions?

Marking the Advanced Fill Forms option from the Document Permissions section (from novaPDF Printing Preferences window, Security->Encryption Level->High Level 128 bits), gives disabled users the possibility to fill forms for accessibility purposes, even if the Modify annotations, fill forms option is unchecked.

How do I share the novaPDF Server printer to be used in a network?

On the computer you have novaPDF Server installed and where you want it shared from, go to Start->Settings->Printers and Faxes. Select novaPDF Server, right click it and choose Sharing. In the following window choose Shared As and after that click on Apply. Now you can access novaPDF Server form the other computers in the same network. You can read a more detailed article on using novaPDF as a shared printer here: How to install and use nova PDF Server as a shared network PDF Printer

How can I print to PDF from QuarkXpress?

Printing your QuarkXpress document to a PDF is very easy with novaPDF. Just open your document (File->Open->Browse to your file, select it and click Open) and select the Print option (File->Print or pressing "Ctrl+P").

Which type of fonts does novaPDF recognize and convert?

novaPDF recognizes and converts text that is created using OpenType and TrueType fonts (most of the fonts used now are OpenType). OpenType is a font format initially developed by Microsoft but later Adobe joined in supporting it, and now it is considered to be the successor of both the TrueType font and the Type 1 ("PostScript") font format.

Type 1 fonts are not currently supported (will be included in a future version though), so if you have some text that uses Type 1 fonts the only solution for now in printing it to PDF using novaPDF is to convert the Type 1 fonts to OpenType or TrueType by using an automatic conversion tool such as FontForge (open source, see fontforge.sourceforge.net).

How can I configure novaPDF to create PDFs with reduced file size?

If you want to create smaller PDF files you will have to use text and/or image compression. In novaPDF’s Printing Preferences window (Start->Settings->Printers and Faxes, right-click novaPDF and select Printing Preferences) select the Graphics tab. Select Compress from the Predefined drop-down menu to reduce the size of the resulting PDF. Optionally you can set higher or lower compression levels by clicking on any of the Compress options and then clicking on Configure to set the wanted Level. A higher level of compression will result in a smaller PDF file size, but also it will affect the text/images quality of the PDF. For more information please refer to the Help file.

From which applications can I print using novaPDF?

novaPDF can be used from any Windows application that supports printing.

Can I have different settings for novaPDF on the same computer?

Yes, you can have different settings for novaPDF if you use the Profiles option. In the novaPDF Printing Preferences window go to the Profiles tab. Click on New to create a new profile and after you name it properly click the Set Active button. Now you can change the settings you need and after you will click the Ok button those will be saved under that Profile. You can create as many profiles as you want, depending on your needs. For more details about profiles refer to the help file.

How can I produce PDF files without the "Created with novaPDF..." notice?

When you install novaPDF you can use it for how long you want without any time restrictions. However, if it is not registered, novaPDF will place a footer notice on each page of the generated PDF file. This notice can be removed only by ordering novaPDF. For information on prices and other benefits for registering novaPDF, please visit the Buy Now page.

When I try to convert WORD files to PDF, the pges appear in reversed order. Why?

novaPDF saves the pages in the order it receives them from Word so most likely you have the option Print pages in reverse order set in Word. To disable it, in Microsoft Office Word (2000/XP/2003) go to Options->Advanced tab->Print section. In there you should see this option and uncheck it.

Where can I find the novaPDF Help File?

To access the contents of the Help File, either go to Start->Programs->novaPDF Printer and select it from the drop-down menu, or from the novaPDF Properties window, click on the Help button. This will open the Help file exactly at the section you were looking at.

I think I've discovered a bug in novaPDF. What should I do?

If you have discovered a bug in novaPDF please contact us at support@novapdf.com and we will investigate and solve it as soon as possible. To reproduce the problem it would help sending us also the document that you tried creating a pdf from.

Can a password-protected PDF file be opened by the recipient if they don't have novaPDF installed?

novaPDF creates PDF files, it does not open/view them. When you create a PDF file with novaPDF, even if you password protect it or not, the PDF will be a standard PDF file that can be opened by any PDF viewer/reader. So the recipient doesn't need to have novaPDF installed in order to view the PDF (but in order to open it they need a free PDF viewer/reader installed).

novaPDF Printer Server runs out of licenses when using scheduled printing tasks

When printing to the novaPDF Printer Server from a scheduled task on the server, the list of available licenses is filled with the other computers that connect remotely to the server. This happens even if from those computers there are no print jobs started.

If there is a task configured in the scheduler that runs for a specific user, when that user connects remotely to the server the scheduler task will be run in the remote session. When the scheduled printing runs from the print server for that remotely connected user, novaPDF will verify if the computer from where the remote connection was started is a licensed computer. In this situation, the remote computer will be assigned a license, even if the scheduler is configured and runs from the server.

In order to correct this behavior, we advise you to create a special user on the server. This new user shouldn't be used by any other people to connect to the server, you will use it only to define the scheduled printing tasks.

Why is there an empty file created by novaPDF in the Documents folder at each print job?

Until version 7.1 of novaPDF, there was a specific novaPDF Port Monitor installed along with novaPDF printer. One of the main reasons for this port monitor was to provide public profiles that are configured on the server, to client network computers that use novaPDF printer as a shared network printer.

However, starting with novaPDF 7.2, the Port Monitor is not installed anymore and a local port is now used instead. Because of this, an empty file with the same name as the port name is created by Windows in the "Documents" folder for the currently logged in user. This file can be deleted, but Windows will create it again at the next print job. The name of the file, by edition, is:
NOVAO7 - for novaPDF Professional Server
NOVAP7 - for novaPDF Professional Desktop
NOVAE7 - for novaPDF Standard Server
NOVAS7 - for novaPDF Standard Desktop
NOVAT7 - for novaPDF Lite Server
NOVAL7 - for novaPDF Lite Desktop

For the Server editions (including the SDK and OEM editions), a Windows Service called novaPDF will be installed together with the printer. This service is responsible for the distribution of public profiles to the client computers.

The service is not installed for the Desktop editions of novaPDF. Also, for the Server editions, if you only use the novaPDF printer as a local printer and you do not use public profiles, you may instruct novaPDF setup to not install this service by adding next command line parameter: /DoNotInstallService
