Summary:
This tutorial shows how to convert a web page to a PDF file using novaPDF. novaPDF is a PDF converter that allows creating PDF files from any Windows application that supports printing. If you don't have novaPDF installed, use the Download page to download and install it.

Details:
Web pages are displayed with the help of browsers, most popular ones being Internet Explorer, Mozilla FireFox and Opera (on Windows based systems). While the majority of browsers give you the option to save the web page you're visiting, because of the format that is being saved in, it is sometimes difficult to send the web page for someone else to review or even store it on your computer for future reference. This is where converting a web page to a PDF file might prove handy. Just as you would to with a normal printer, you go to Files-Print select novaPDF and voilà, you have converted the web page to a PDF file.

Convert a web page to PDF from Internet Explorer

Once novaPDF is installed you can convert any web page to a PDF directly from Internet Explorer. Simply visit the page you want converted and "print it" to novaPDF. Here are the steps to follow when converting a web page to a PDF from Internet Explorer:
  • Start Internet Explorer and go to the web page you want to convert to PDF
  • Go to File->Print (or press Ctrl+P) and in the Select Printer section click on novaPDF
  • Before creating the PDF file you can adjust novaPDF's settings by using the Properties button (for instance adding document information, using auto-save options, embedding fonts)
  • Click on Print and choose a location where you want the PDF file saved. After the PDF is created it will be automatically opened in the default PDF viewer (this can be configured too using novaPDF's Properties window).
Convert web page to PDF

By default each page of the PDF document will contain a header (title of the page, and Page x of y information) and a footer (with the url of the printed web page and the printing date). If you don't want these items included in the PDF:
  • Before creating the PDF file, in Internet Explorer's menu go to File->Print Preview
  • In the Print Preview window press Alt+E or click on Turn headers and footers on or off. You'll see in the Preview section how the header/footer text is removed.
  • Additionally you can configure the message printed in the header or footer by clicking the Page Setup button and including the custom text in the Header and Footer fields (note that you'll not be able to revert to the old format that easy)
  • Close the Print Preview window and create the PDF file without the header/footer.
No headers in PDF

Note: When converting the web page to PDF it's possible that some background images do not show up in the PDF (but they are on the web page). To correct that, in Internet Explorer go to Tools->Internet Options->Advanced, and in the Printing area thick the option Print background colors and images.

Convert a web page to PDF from Mozilla FireFox

Once novaPDF is installed you can convert any web page to a PDF directly from Mozilla FireFox. Simply visit the page you want converted and "print it" to novaPDF. Here are the steps to follow when converting a web page to a PDF from Mozilla FireFox:
  • Start Mozilla FireFox and go to the web page you want to convert to PDF
  • Go to File->Print (or press Ctrl+P) and in the Printer section choose from the drop-down novaPDF
  • Before creating the PDF file you can adjust novaPDF's settings by using the Properties button (for instance adding document information, using auto-save options, embedding fonts). Also, for websites using frames FireFox offers an option to print each frame separately, only selected frame or as viewed.
  • Click on OK and choose a location where you want the PDF file saved. After the PDF is created it will be automatically opened in the default PDF viewer (this can be configured too using novaPDF's Properties window).
Convert web page to PDF using Firefox

By default each page of the PDF document will contain a right header (with the URL of the printed web page) and a right footer (with the printing date). If you don't want these items included in the PDF:
  • Before creating the PDF file, in Mozilla FireFox's menu go to File->Page Setup
  • On the Page Setup window click on Margins & Header/Footer. By default, only in the Right Header/Footer section there will be something selected, so you have to choose --blank-- instead of URL and Date/Time
  • Click Ok and then create the PDF file, no header/footer information will be included.
No headers in PDF from FireFox

Note: When converting the web page to PDF it's possible that some background images do not show up in the PDF (but they are on the web page). To correct that, in Mozilla FireFox go to File->Page Setup->Format & Options, and thick the option Print Background (colors and images).

Convert a web page to PDF from Opera

Once novaPDF is installed you can convert any web page to a PDF directly from Opera. Simply visit the page you want converted and "print it" to novaPDF. Here are the steps to follow when converting a web page to a PDF from Opera:
  • Start Opera and go to the web page you want to convert to PDF

  • Click on Print and choose a location where you want the PDF file saved. After the PDF is created it will be automatically opened in the default PDF viewer (this can be configured too using novaPDF's Properties window).

  • On the Print Options window make sure the option Print headers and footers is unchecked
  • Click Ok and then create the PDF file, no header/footer information will be included.
